STUC is relieved to hear of the release of 5 Scottish citizens detained in the Givon Detention Centre in Israel, but deeply concerned that the activists were detained in the first place. One of the five, Lynn Paterson, is due to be in Inverness on Monday as an accredited delegate to STUC Congress.

This action by the Israeli government, which prevented the Scots from visiting Bethlehem at the invitation of the Mayor to attend the launch of an educational project, is part of a pattern of repression aimed at preventing effective solidarity with the Palestinian people.

STUC hopes and expects the swift and safe return to Scotland of the five and salutes their courage and that of the thousand plus people involved in the Welcome to Palestine campaign committed to freeing the people of Palestine from a silent blockade.
